Labour’s parliamentary candidate for Banbury, Suzette Watson has called on the sitting Conservertive MP Victoria Prentis to back Jeremy Corbyn’s no-confidence vote in the government to prevent a disastrous no-deal Brexit.

Earlier this year Prentis spoke out about the dangers of a no-deal Brexit in a speech in the House of Commons, saying,

“I ask all Members, setting aside both ideology and pride for a minute, if they can, to think about their constituents and the jobs that will be at risk if we head for a no-deal Brexit, which would be a complete disaster.”

In recent weeks a no-deal Brexit has looked increasingly likely, with the government stepping up preparations for this scenario and speculation that the prime minister could suspend parliament to force through a no-deal.

Jeremy Corbyn has written to leaders of other political parties and senior backbenchers across Parliament to lay out his plan to stop a no-deal Brexit, by calling a no confidence vote in the government, delaying Brexit to prevent the UK leaving the EU without a deal on 31 October,  followed by a snap general election.

Labour’s Parliamentary candidate, Suzette Watson said,

“Victoria Prentis described the prospect of a no-deal Brexit as disastrous, and she is right. No deal would be a disaster for our economy and for people’s lives – it would raise food prices and the cost of living and would put jobs and local businesses at risk.

“I ask that she heeds her own advice and sets aside ideology and pride to use her power as an MP to do what is best for this constituency and for the country by supporting the vote of no confidence and the Labour Party’s proposal”
